Can/can't

Can - это модальный глагол, который переводится "уметь", "мочь". Canне употребляется самостоятельно, а только в сочетании с другим смысловым глаголом. Он обозначает возможность, способность, вероятность совершенного действия, выраженного смысловым глаголом.

e.g. I can swim.       

          She can dance.

-can't cannot

e.g. I can't swim.      

          She can't dance.

?Can...V?

e.g. Can you swim?  - Yes, I can. No, I can't.       

          Can she dance? - Yes, she can. No, she can't.

 

  • Canне меняется в третьем лице единственном числе.

e.g. He can speak French.

  • В прошедшем времени форма can - could(couldn't).

e.g. He can drive. - He could drive.

  • Иногда Youcan... и Canyou... могут быть безличными и говорят обо всех людях в целом.

e.g. You can see many stars at night from here. (= people in general can see many stars)

  • В некоторых случаях вместо canиспользуется beableto. Например, в будущем времени.

e.g. We'll be able to do that soon.
